NOSA smell training is a medical device intended for training of the olfactory system, by association of scents. The smell training with the NOSA device restores or improves olfactory dysfunction; hyposmia, anosmia, and parosmia.
Indication for use:
NOSA smell training is a smell-training medical device. The training program was developed in collaboration with one of the world’s leading scientists within smell; Johan Lundström, and Karolinska Institute, Sweden’s largest medical education and research center. NOSA smell training is intended for people aged 12 years and older who have hyposmia, anosmia, or parosmia resulting from a respiratory viral infection.
Studies have shown that a large number of patients have not fully recovered their sense of smell after a COVID-19 infection. A study in the US showed that around 20% were still affected by a reduced, or altered, sense of smell after recovery. A study from Harward Medical School has shown that a reduced sense of smell can affect well-being, by causing depression and a negative impact on social relations, appetite, and sex drive.
NOSA smell training kit
The purpose of NOSA smell training is to help individuals improve or recover their sense of smell, for example after a COVID-19 infection, and thereby increase quality of life. It shortens the training period to 8 weeks due to its “train on the go” feature with effective nose plugs that are easy to breathe through. NOSA smell training enables users to train wherever they want, whenever they want.
The nose plugs are made of TPE plastic and are scented with a fragrant substance infused into the material. The kit comes with 10 boxes of different scents, each containing 16 nose plugs of the scent; Lemon, Strawberry, Orange, Lavender, Vanilla, Melon, Rosemary, Menthol, Cola, and Cherry. A clinical study has shown that Fruity and spicy fragrances are to be recommended for a smell training program. The training program includes using 4 different scents/nose plugs a day, 5 days a week, and smelling 10 minutes per scent (the training program is presented on the product).
Instructions for use:
Upon opening the NOSA smell training box, familiarize yourself with the schedule displayed on the lid. You will smell four scents per day, two scents in the morning and two scents in the evening. This will repeat five days a week for eight consecutive weeks.
Step 1: Always begin by cleaning your hands. This ensures that you avoid any potential irritation or infection.
Step 2: Carefully insert the first scented nose plug into your nose. Apply gently into the nostrils until the bracket meets the nasal wall. Breathe normally through the product.
Step 3: Set a timer for 10 minutes. During this time, focus on the scent. Try to remember what the smell is supposed to smell like. Visualization can help reinforce your memory of the scent.
Step 4: Once the first session is complete, carefully remove the scented nasal plug from your nose and insert the next plug according to the schedule on the lid. Repeat the process, setting a timer for another 10 minutes.
Step 5: Follow the same steps for the evening session. (The smells for the evening session are always different from the morning session.)
NOSA smell training app:
NOSA smell training app is a digital tool developed to facilitate smell training and thereby enhance individuals’ olfactory awareness and overall well-being through interactive exercises and progress tracking.
The app is designed to serve the following primary purposes:
Scheduling and Reminders: Provide users with a structured calendar to organize their smell training sessions and offer reminders, fostering a consistent routine.
Visualization: Utilize images to bolster the user’s experience and engagement during the training sessions.
Feedback: Allow users to document subjective feedback on their sense of smell, quality of life, and progress over time for personal reflection and self-awareness.
Disclaimer: The primary objective of NOSA smell training app is to promote well-being and personal awareness of one’s olfactory senses. It is not designed, nor should it be used, for the diagnosis, prevention, monitoring, treatment, or alleviation of any medical condition or disease. In alignment with MDR EU 2017/745.
Benefits of improving your sense of smell:
By improving your sense of smell, you can increase awareness of your surroundings and experience different scents more deeply. It can also help in avoiding dangerous situations, such as sensing the smell of fire or gas. Lastly, it helps in reducing the negative effects of loss of smell, such as the impact on well-being caused by depression and a negative impact on social relations.
